Getting sorted

The wide downstairs book case.
Over the years I have amassed a few books. Even now in this digital age, I keep buying books. Which means I have a fair amount that need to be put somewhere. Now, the house I live in is not one of the biggest. In fact, it is on the small side with low ceilings everywhere.

The narrow downstairs bookcase
About a year or so ago I bought a set of nice book cases. I wanted to put them up upstairs, but alas, they were too high. So, they were put in the living room, where I would have preferred not to have any bookcases. Don't ask why, it's just something I don't particularly like. Two of the four book cases I have downstairs are however filled with dvd's (plus a whole shelf in a cupboard), which leaves only two cases for books. They are full. Both of them.

Work in progress upstairs
Not only are those two full, I still had a few boxes upstairs that I hadn't yet unpacked. Filled with books, photo albums and maps. And then last week at work, I saw two bookcases sitting in a hallway doing nothing. I asked about them and yesterday morning I was told I could have them. I needed some help getting them here (colleague with a car with trailer attachment, trailer and another colleague to help lift/carry/do the heavy work), but this morning they arrived.

The finished result
I started putting the first books in and then found the remaining boxes to empty those as well. A few hours later and I am quite puffed out, but the book cases are full and the boxes (bar one with leaflet maps and such) are empty.

The almost empty shelf will be used for English children's books
Freeing up some space downstairs.
The bulk of the books were travel books. Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, France and even Japan. Maps from Denmark to Canada and from Italy to Norway. Plus I found a few books and maps of Scotland. Which were put apart to be used later this summer.

    1. I used to have about twice as many, but I gave the ones I never read to a second hand shop, because I didn't want to take them with me to Norway. But, I think I have acquired at least 40 books since and the end is not in sight!!

A Welcome Wagon sounds great. Brom and Miss Oswin are getting excited anyway!

  3. Books, CD's and cats pretty well sum up my life too. I also visit with dogs and their owners as they pass by. Our small street is a favorite for dog walking.

  4. Crikey Mara ...... they can take over, aye?? Books, books and more books. Our house used to be filled to overflowing with 'em. Book cases in EVERY room in the house and boxes full of books in the garage. The secret is ..... get old ..... Mum finally came to her senses and let Dad find new homes for most of them. Luckily she has three daughters (all book lovers) and they took a lot so she doesn't feel they have disappeared out of her life altogether. Me ..... I don't mind books ..... the old ones smell pretty good but that's about all they're good for as far as I'm concerned. How's Miss Oswin??

    1. I couldn't deal with books being in every room! I would prefer one room set apart for just my books, but that is a dream that will probably take some time to fullfill.

Miss Oswin is doing fine. Up to some tricks again I would say. You will read about it on Saturday.

  6. Awesome, so glad you got the extra shelves. It is a nice feeling to have a place for everything. I've told my husband that in our next place, which will definitely be way smaller than where we live now, I want each room to have a wall of built in shelving so I can keep a lot of my stuff!

  10. We have mostly antique books that belonged to grandparents or us as children. Most of the more current books were donated or given to friends. Great job on eyeing the bookcases and having friends to help. Hope your weekend goes well.

    1. I have one children's book that used to belong to my mother. Still very un politically correct, but it is still in my collection along with all the other books by the same author.

  11. That is quite the book collection you've got, and my mom says that's a beautiful thing. The digital age is nice...but there's really just something about a REAL book. Tastes MUCH better then trying to chew on some sort of technology-book...BOL
