J is for...

Jellyfish

I don't know very much about jellyfish. Well apart from the fact that their tentacles can sting and can give you burn-like wounds which hurt (although it never happened to me). And that they haven't got much of a brain. And they move forward by propulsion. And they come in different sizes. Oh, and they look beautiful!

Wow, I knew more about jellyfish than I thought...

For more J-words from around the world, please check out ABC Wednesday and join in the fun!

Photo taken by yours truly (ie me!) in Ouwehands Dierenpark Rhenen, the Netherlands in October 2009

  1. Good choice for J, Mara. Beautiful picture. Am I correct in guessing you didn't take it yourself? Because if you did, it's wonderful.

  6. Jellyfish are mysterious and fascinating. My son got stung bu some while we were in the Carribean. They really hurt. No fun at all, but beautiful all the same.

  8. Fantastic photo - it looks almost abstract in a strange sort of way - then the detail begins to emerge - the color is exquisite.

  10. They look especially beautiful when they are just floating on the surface of the water -- if viewed from a boat.

  11. What a terrific jellyfish photo. Beautiful!

I know that if you are stung by a jellyfish you should pee on the sore spot to relieve the pain.

  12. Oh, just noticed someone suggested hanging this photo on your wall. Perhaps you could hang it next to your 'ugly' painting LOL

  14. Mara, that photo just dragged me right on in. I didn't realize it was a jellyfish until I read the title. Great J choice indeed. (I think you pretty well captured the high points of jellyfish; that's all I know too except STAY AWAY.)

  16. You know more then me. I love the beach but really don't like to step foot in the water because of things like that.

  18. Beautiful and deadly, some of them, aren't they? Just like tigers, polar bears, and killer whales - and to a lesser extent, wasps and bees!

    Lovely blue! :)

  19. My daughter lives in Florida and said there's jellyfish all over the beaches. Small ones no bigger than a quarter. Would be a strange site indeed.
