Beppe

She was born in August 1918. Married during the war. Had five children. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lost her husband in the eighties. She was a tall and big woman (not fat though).

She hated cooking dinner, but would sometimes do so for every member of the family individually (even on a farm everybody deserved at least one hot meal a day). She loved doing the dishes by hand. She would always bring sugarloaves and chewing gum or peppermint when she came to visit. During the last few years she suffered from Alzheimer's Disease and lived in a care home. She didn't recognize anybody anymore.

She was the last of my grandparents and she died this morning.

Beppe is the Frysian name for Grandmother

  1. My hartelijke condolences! Your Beppe lived a long life, and seeing her go suffering from Alzheimer's is difficult. My Pake (grandfather) went that way, not knowing anyone anymore.

    Just remember the sugarbread/suikerbrood/sukerbolle.

  2. Looking at her photo it becomes obvious you two were related. I'm so sorry about your loss.

  3. This does confuse me a bit because I know a woman called Beppe, and she was called that when we were young adults. Who knows? Maybe it was Beppie.

  4. Sorry, just read to the end again, and I realize that my comment seems flippant. Sorry about your loss -- just got so carried away with the name that I didn't read until the end at first.

  5. So sorry about the loss of your Beppe. You will always have the memories of her, but the love in your heart for her will always be there.

  6. Oh, I'm so sorry, Mara. How very sad.

You obviously had great love for her - admiration too - and it's just terrible to see what Alzheimer's does to someone you love.

    Hugs. xx
