Life and death

Not a dead sheep, she just couldn't get up anymore.
Sometimes when you walk, you come across slightly less pretty sights. Like dead animals. So, warning up front: this will show you some of them!

Recently I came across a dead bird, which was blue. It took me a bit to realise what it was though, as I couldn't think of any blue birds at all. But on carefully turning it over (hoping there were no maggots crawling about), I thought it was a tit.

On another walk, I came across some white in a ditch. On closer inspection (look, no touch), I realised it must be a dead swan and had been there for some time by the looks of it. Slowly decomposing and going back into the cycle of life.

And yet another day, I saw this tiny little mouse, lying at the side of the road. It looked quite peaceful really. As that walk was well over two weeks ago now, I doubt there is anything left of it now.

Goodbye Lindy

In September of 2011 I traveled to Canada to see first hand what my emigration country of choice actually looked like. During my first week in Alberta, I met up with a blog friend of mine, called Kay. We had met a couple of times before when she and her husband had been in the Netherlands, but this time I was on their turf.

Kay had invited me to stay with her and her dog in a hotel. I believe it was the first or one of the first times her dog had stayed in a hotel, but she loved every minute and behaved beautifully. On one day we traveled to Jasper and on the other day together, we saw the Badlands, which I loved. And Lindy (the dog) was there all the time.

Lindy was a rescue dog. Nobody knew exactly what her age was, but she was not a pup by any means. And during the last few years that showed. She started having some medical problems and then during the last week or so, she went off her food. Kay and her husband had to make the incredibly difficult decision to let Lindy go.

My trip to Canada was a memorable one. And Lindy was part of that memory. All my love go to Kay and her husband.

Laurens

Late August a colleague of mine went to see a doctor about some swelling in his groin area. A few days later he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Unfortunately not in the early stages, because it had already spread to the blood and bones, but the doctors still gave him 9 months, more if the medication would work. His weight kept dropping though, since he couldn't keep his food down and he was admitted to hospital with severe dehydration.

While in hospital they discovered it had also spread to his brain and the nine months was quickly changed into a couple of weeks. He passed away on Monday. Today all the colleagues from our lot said goodbye to him for the last time. He will be very much missed.
