Resolutions

A few years ago I made a resolution to get rid of my debt. I owed the bank over 17,000 euro due to overspending and a massive hole in my hand. Well, for once I managed to keep that resolution. Of course it took a while, but early 2009 I was debt free. Everything paid off. The reason for that resolution was my wish to emigrate to Canada and with a debt I didn't stand a chance.

Once I had gotten rid of my debt I had to start saving. Because with a debt they won't allow you in, but neither will they if you haven't got two cents to rub together. So, I started saving. And saving. And saving. There were some spanners in the works: Sophie became ill with cancer; my computer crashed and I even went on holiday. But as I looked at my savings account yesterday I realised: I've made my second goal. So, I will start looking for an agent and a job in Canada asap and hope to cross the pond one-way in late summer!

My resolution this year: emigrate to Canada... What's yours?

PS: I wish all my readers and followers a very happy and healthy 2011!

  2. I would like to visit the Netherlands. Just kidding -- well not really kidding, but it's not a resolution and wouldn't happen this year. There was once a song by I am Tyson, Alberta Bound .... Can't find it on YouTube but here's a different Alberta Bound by a different singer. Get used to country music, eh. :)

  3. That name was Ian Tyson, not I am -- since I am not.

  4. I know the song Anvilcloud's talking about - I think he means Gordon Lightfoot.

All the very best Mara. Hope you can cross this resolution off your list soon too.

  5. Congratulations on reaching your goals! It sounds like you were doing the Dave Ramsey "beans and rice" thing in order to pay everything off.
We look forward to seeing you on this side of the pond!

  7. Mara, fantastisch! You've shown some great willpower and sense of purpose, and that will only help you in your next adventure.

Just remember, the weather in Canada will offer you (mostly) a colder, snowier winter than in Holland!

Where in Canada are you planning to settle?

  9. Congratulations with the debt and saving program. Good for you!
Of course you know I'll do what I can to help you move to Canada. It's a great big country, and you have a lot of choices about where to settle. Some places don't have particularly bad winters, but you like winter anyway, so that's good.
And, re Anvilcloud's song discussion, both Ian Tyson and Gordon Lightfood recorded "Alberta Bound" but Lightfoot wrote it. (Canadians refer to him by his last name, because he's a Canadian, too.)

  11. Happy New Year, Mara! We went to Canada in 1960 later moved to the States. Never regretted it -- but for right now, I think things are probably better in Canada than in the States, for a new start. Thankfully we were firmly embedded in the States when things started crumbling. They will pick up again soon.
